Annual vs. Monthly Membership Pricing Calculator
Find out whether your annual discount is actually a good trade — not just in total revenue, but in lifetime value and cash flow. A deep annual discount can raise retention and still lose you money if it’s steeper than the churn it’s saving.

How this calculation works
Annual LTV = Annual price × (1 ÷ (1 − annual renewal rate))
Blended LTV = (Monthly LTV × % monthly) + (Annual LTV × % annual)
The annual side of this math uses renewal rate rather than churn rate, because an annual subscriber doesn’t have a monthly opportunity to leave — they’ve committed for a year, and the real decision point is what happens at renewal. A 55% renewal rate means, on average, an annual subscriber sticks around for about 1 ÷ (1 − 0.55) ≈ 2.2 years.
The trade-off an annual discount is actually making
Offering annual pricing is a bet: you’re trading a lower effective monthly rate for cash upfront and (usually) meaningfully better retention, since a subscriber who’s already paid for the year has no monthly cancel button to press. Whether that bet pays off depends entirely on whether the retention gain outweighs the discount — and that’s exactly what most creators never actually calculate, they just pick a round discount that “feels right,” commonly 15-20%.
$39/month with 8% monthly churn gives an LTV of about $488 per monthly subscriber (roughly 12.5-month average lifespan). A $348/year plan (effectively $29/month, a 25% discount) with a 55% annual renewal rate gives an LTV of about $773 per annual subscriber (roughly 2.2 years average lifespan) — nearly 60% higher lifetime value despite the steep discount, because the retention gain outweighs the lower rate by a wide margin.
Why cash flow matters as much as LTV here
Annual plans front-load revenue: a subscriber who might have churned after 3 months on the monthly plan instead hands you a full year of cash on day one if they choose annual. This matters for creators reinvesting in ads, content, or product development, since a business with more cash upfront can compound faster — even at an identical blended LTV, the plan mix that collects cash sooner is often the more strategically useful one.
